We'd lucked out with another airbnb, this time on the other side of Wellington so we could be close to the Weta Cave and workshops. This one was just higher than the safe zone for tsunamis which was reassuring,!!
It was also beautifully designed and Geraldine our hostess had left lots of lovely touches. She'd also said we could have a late checkout and use their pool.
Weta workshops have produced physical props, miniatures and digital effects for loads of films and public art works e.g. LOTR, Hobbit, Ghost in the shell, Thor Ragnarok, etc - over 140 films plus the Gallipoli exhibition we had already seen last visit in Te Papa.
It's a bit busy around there for parking so we ended up running to get our timed slot at 9:30 and arrived gasping to just miss the tail end of our group disappearing inside. They called a staff member to escort us to join them. No photography is allowed in most of the tour but there is an opportunity near the end to pretend to fight an orc.

this statue is outside the workshops so anyone can have a piccie with it |
We went back to our bnb to eat a leisurely lunch by the pool and then set off to Fielding to meet up with the Alcocks for Kai's birthday.
We arrived just in time to accompany them to canoe polo in Palmerston North where Kai, Jago and Molly went on the lagoon while Teresa, Jono and I walked along the river for the 2 hours they were practising their canoe polo skills. Molly drove us very capably both there and back.
The late birthday tea had been chosen by Kai,orange pasta and Movenpick chocolate ice cream supplemented by hokey pokey ice-cream, which was delicious :-) Jensen had it ready for us as we walked through the door as he had been unable to canoe polo due to his hurt elbow.
